Where do you pay for cleaning?
Sawyer introduces the Lower Levels Janitorial Staff during a shop visit. Finish that conversation to unlock the service. Payment is in the end-of-day services list, rather than a purchase during his visit.
- Close the shop, finish your evening activities and choose Sleep.
- On the confirmation screen, select Janitorial Service. Hover over its information icon to read the service description.
- Check tonight’s charge, the total for all selected services and the remaining balance. If the total exceeds your funds, reduce optional spending before confirming.
- End the day. In the morning report, look for the entry saying the storefront was cleaned and garbage collected.

What happens to items in the trash can?
Putting an item in the Trash Can leaves it there until the nighttime collection. Before paying for cleaning, take out anything you still want to keep. Collection permanently removes ordinary items left inside.
Trash Can: check its contents before collection
The trash can and the garbage outside are different parts of the service. An empty bin does not keep the storefront clean: skipping the service still allows outdoor garbage to accumulate.
Radioactive waste needs its own disposal route. The cleaning routine leaves hazardous waste behind; use the radioactive-waste guide to arrange its removal.
How much attractiveness do missed nights cost?
Once the service is unlocked, each uncleaned night adds garbage. Starting from a freshly cleaned storefront, the penalty develops as follows:
| Consecutive nights without cleaning | Loss from base attractiveness | Example with base attractiveness 250 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0% | 250 |
| 2 | 20% | 200 |
| 3 | 30% | 175 |
| 4 | 40% | 150 |
| 5 or more | 50% | 125 |
The game rounds the deducted amount down to a whole point. The example excludes separate bonuses. Cleaning resets this garbage penalty in one night; you do not need several consecutive paid nights to clear a large pile.
If visits have slowed after several unpaid nights, clean before buying more display items. Then check your display, customer groups and attractiveness.
Why does the cleaning fee change?
The normal fee rises with the current game day. For day D, divide D by 10 and discard the remainder:
| Storefront condition | Charge before reputation penalties | Day 10 example |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary cleaning | 3 + whole part of D ÷ 10 | 4 credits |
| Vandalized | 75 + whole part of D ÷ 10 | 76 credits |
The Black Market’s distrust penalty doubles the cleaning charge. If your save has Sawyer’s Crew, ordinary cleaning costs zero; vandalism cleanup instead starts at 30 plus the whole part of D ÷ 5, before that reputation penalty. Read the services screen for the total that applies tonight.
Paid cleaning also clears the vandalism state. Insurance handles stolen property; compare the theft and insurance guide when deciding which service to fund after a break-in.
How does cleaning connect to the Underground Exchange?
Sawyer later introduces the Exchange and gives you its current list. Once that access is unlocked, the crew can collect requested goods from the same bin and leave the exchanged goods the next morning.
Exchange list: check the current offer
- Open the current list and check the requested items, quantities and return.
- Put the required goods in the trash can. Keep unrelated stock in normal storage.
- Select Janitorial Service when ending the day.
- Check the bin the next morning for the exchanged goods.
Some offers change every few days. Open the list again before preparing another exchange. Black Market distrust blocks this exchange even while the cleaning service can still be paid for. The Underground Exchange Directive shows how to read its entries; the contraband guide covers handling the goods afterward.
What should you check when it does not work?
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| No Janitorial Service in the list | Finish Sawyer’s introductory visit, then reopen the sleep screen |
| You cannot confirm the night | Compare your funds with the total for every selected service |
| Ordinary trash is still there next morning | Check whether Janitorial Service was selected for that night |
| The Exchange gave no return | Check access, the current offer, required quantities and Black Market distrust |
| Customers remain scarce after cleaning | Check the stock on display and the customer group you are trying to attract |
Sawyer’s warning and service unlock
Sawyer’s day-10 introduction says cleaning belongs to the scavengers. This is a linear warning, not a choice to obey or defy: finish the conversation to unlock the paid Janitorial Service. There is no normal self-sweeping action and no separate punishment for ignoring a DIY cleaning ban. You do not have to buy cleaning immediately. Sawyer’s Crew starts with the service; skipping the introduction also unlocks it. A sudden fee increase comes from the day count, vandalism or Black Market distrust, not from receiving the warning.
The Underground Exchange is a separate introduction on day 25 for ordinary starts. Sawyer’s Crew and Fence have earlier access; Crew’s introductory list arrives on day 1, including when skipping. Once unlocked, put only exchange inputs in the trash and select cleaning before sleep. Exchanges run first, ordinary trash is then destroyed, and rewards are put back for collection in the morning. Each recipe runs at most once per night; shared ingredients compete by priority. Seven recipes are permanent; three of seven promotions are selected each week.
At Black Market −40 the exchange is blocked while paid cleaning still runs. Remove inputs before paying or they may be destroyed as ordinary trash. Successful exchanges give base Black Market +0.1875 each; returned contraband can still be discovered later. If the Butcher is hunting you, a later Sawyer offer can unlock a separate one-use 500-credit nightly intervention. Select that service to end the hunt; paying ordinary cleaning does not buy it.
