Where do you get the Toolbox and materials?

Item Where to look What to prepare
Toolbox Dr. Jackson’s shop, after day 14 Visit after closing your own shop. Jackson invites you during his introduction.
Scrap Metal A Junker’s material-selling visit Check the items and quote on the counter. Keep some for cage repairs and Toolbox slots.
Electronic Parts (Common) A Junker’s material-selling visit Look for the Common version before buying. The repairs below use this item.

In Demo 050, starting with Skip Intro bypasses the Toolbox date requirement. You still buy it from Jackson, and this stock appears only while you do not own a Toolbox.

A Junker’s material offer includes Scrap Metal and Common Electronic Parts. The item catalogue helps you identify them and compare base values with the current quote.

How do you store and select tools?

Toolbox

Toolbox

  1. Buy the Toolbox and open it.
  2. Put your tools into the unlocked numbered slots. A new box has 3 slots. It also accepts the red and blue labelers.
  3. Press the matching number key to equip a stored tool. Slot 1 uses key 1, slot 2 uses key 2, and so on.
  4. Use the equipped tool on its target. Pressing the same key again puts it away.

For example, keep a magnifying glass and screwdriver in your first two slots. Their numbers follow their positions, so moving a tool to another slot changes its shortcut.

How do you unlock more Toolbox slots?

Use a piece of your own Scrap Metal on your own Toolbox. Each piece unlocks 1 additional slot and is consumed. The box stops expanding at 9 slots, so a new 3-slot box needs 6 pieces to reach the maximum.

The tooltip shows the unlocked slot count. Expand only when you need another tool shortcut, especially if the same Scrap Metal is needed to keep your Animal Cage repaired.

What can Scrap Metal and Electronic Parts repair or upgrade?

Repair and upgrade materials

Select the material, then use it on the target you own. These uses consume the material.

Material and target Result
Scrap Metal on a damaged Animal Cage Restores 50% of its maximum durability, capped at full durability. A 30/100 cage becomes 80/100.
Common Electronic Parts on a partly used Basic Module Extractor Reduces its maximum uses by 1, then restores up to 4 uses. An empty 0/6 extractor becomes 4/5.
Common Electronic Parts on a Cleaner Robot without an incinerator Adds the built-in incinerator and turns it on.
Common Electronic Parts on a Bottle Printer Each component adds one upgrade. A total of 3 unlocks standard bottles; a total of 9 unlocks large bottles. See bottles and containers.
Common Electronic Parts on a Scav Scanner Each component raises its extra-loot chance by 5 percentage points, up to 100%. See the Scav Scanner.

Refurbishing the Basic Extractor repeatedly reduces its maximum uses. Check both numbers before spending another component. The Advanced Extractor does not wear out through extraction; see machine modules and extractors.

Where do you get a Cleaner Robot, and what does the upgrade do?

The Retired Rat Rancher sells the Cleaner Robot. Joe Wild’s Ranching contact, available in this Demo, introduces the weekly rancher and has a base fee of 500 Credits. The immediate starter kit does not include the robot. See Joe Wild’s contacts and kits for the introduction.

Place the robot in the Animal Cage and fit its Energy Cell. It collects feces overnight or when activated manually. Leave room in its storage. Normal cleanup costs 4 energy; enabling the upgraded incinerator doubles that to 8 and burns stored feces after cleanup. You can switch the incinerator off to collect feces instead. See rat breeding and cage care and energy cells for the full setup.

Can these materials restore a completely broken machine?

Machines whose description says they are beyond repair are salvage targets. Scrap Metal and Electronic Parts do not return them to working order. The dismantling route is covered in scrap and smelting. Joe Wild’s Ruined Machine Scrapping contact is locked in Demo 049-Rev5-L; it is separate from the material-selling Junker visit above.

For the shop entrance, other goods and stock conditions, see Dr. Jackson.
