Prepare seeds and disks
Buy Plant Genetics through Wild after Retired Farmer: base price 1250 credits. The kit includes a DNA Manipulator, Gene Scanner and four blank disks; Jackson then stocks DNA equipment. Turn on your owned scanner and inspect the seed. The target must be your own, unpacked seed and must not be growing.
DNA Manipulator
Extract, then apply
- Put a seed with the desired trait in Target and a blank disk in Output disk. Leave Input disk empty. Install a Genetic Stabilizer first if you need to keep the seed.
- Supply power and wait for the operation to finish. Without the stabilizer, extraction destroys the seed even on failure. With it, the seed survives, but successful extraction removes one rank of the extracted trait.
- Put the written disk in Input disk and the recipient seed in Target. A successful application adds the disk’s rank and spends one disk use; the last use destroys the disk.
- Read the resulting trait and disk count. The machine normally ejects the disk to its output tray; its toggle can keep disks in their slots. A matching written output disk can collect more uses from a donor with that trait.
Positive and negative filters limit random extraction. Installing both blocks all random candidates. Configure a precision module by using it on a disk carrying the desired trait, then install it. A stabilizer preserves the donor, not an unchanged copy of its trait.
Trait families
Values below are rank I; percentage strength grows with rank^0.75. Opposing traits in a family cannot coexist. Seed-return and durability traits also require compatible crops.

| Nutritious / Nutrient-Poor | Calories+25% / −25% |
| Fast Grower / Slow Grower | Growth speed+25% / −25% |
| Bountiful / Sparse | Harvest quantity+20% / −20% |
| Delicious / Unappetizing | Edible sale value+15% / −15% |
| Drought Resistant / Thirsty | Water use−25% / +25% |
| Hardy / Frail | Pollution sensitivity−30% / +30% |
| Fertile / Infertile | Seed return+25% / −25% |
| Simple Genome / Complex Genome | Genome−4 / +4; locked, no extraction/application |
| Perennial | Repeat harvest; quantity−25%, growth−20%, seeds−50% |
| Purifying / Polluting | Cleans / pollutes growing water |
| Dense | Durability+25% |
| Potent / Weak | Active ingredients+25% / −25% |
| Chemical-production traits | Caffeine 2 mL / coffee mush 10 mL / dream-cap mush 2 mL per harvested item |
Plan the risk and time
Effective complexity combines genome complexity and accumulated heat. At zero effective complexity and no quality bonus, an operation requires 20 progress and has 95% success. Bare speed 10 per working night means two nights; effective complexity 4 needs 36 progress, four nights and 75% success. Bare power demand is 12 kJ per working night. Quality improves success and performance improves speed; check the final displayed values.
Each edit adds heat, including failed applications. New inherited seeds carry the traits but start without that heat. Locked genome traits cannot be transferred; incompatible traits or crops are rejected. Work on spare seeds, verify one operation and retain a donor line before repeating.
